Harle Family Shoot

It was strange for me to be getting up early on a Sunday morning and not be going cycling. This particular Sunday I was heading to Singapore Botanical Gardens with my partner, and photographers assistant for the day, Gabi to do a family shoot for my cycling buddy Lee.

It’s a comment I hear a lot from families, ‘we just have no photos of the four of us together’ and Lee informed me that his wife Sophie had been looking for an appropriate photographer to take some informal family shots for ages…no pressure!

We decided to spend the morning at the Botanical Gardens so that the kids could play around and just have some fun. I much prefer the results when taking candid shots with children and they had so much fun playing games and kicking the football around. I was pleasantly surprised at how natural the children were in-front of the camera once they got used to me being around, note the first picture in this series took very little direction on my part and you can just tell that they’re pretty good mates!

The proof is in the pictures – as you can hopefully see below, it was a breeze to shoot this fun family and I was really pleased with the results. I particularly love the colours of the surrounding greenery against the kids colourful clothes!

Tim’s Singapore Girls

“Singapore Girl, You’re A Great Way To Fly” and in this case there were 3 girls and only one lucky passenger.

People love to receive homemade Christmas cards and this year the Clarsen family will be sending cards to their loved ones with a difference.  Fanny, Alma and Adele donned their Singapore Airline hostess uniforms to serve passenger Tim in an airline scene for the shoot – I think Tim really wanted to be the Captain, but he was relegated to economy class!  Alma and Adele were great models and had an endless selection of funny poses for me to take some test shots whilst setting up my lights. The girls all looked gorgeous and I suppose Tim scrubbed okay too. Here are a few shots from the shoot.

Gardens By The Bay – Off-Site Part 4

Over the months of September and October the Cool Moist Conservatory has made significant progress and is really taking shape.  The elliptical shape is more dramatic than the Cool Dry and looks very impressive with the extra height.  Inside the Cool Moist the upper levels of the core are being completed.   The core serves as the support structure for the man made mountain complete with sky walk and water fall.  Over on the Cool Dry Conservatory the glazing is advancing forward and the scaffolding is being slowly removed.  As the scaffolding is removed you can really see the conservatory take shape as it’s form is revealed.

Sandwiched between the two conservatories is the ‘Hub’ which is also progressing swiftly. The Hub will serve as a link between the conservatories and will house the majority of the ancillary functions that are required for a project of this size.

Below are images from October and November 2010.  The last two images were taken whilst I was shooting a lighting mockup of the arch lighting.

Cyclone Race Series Team Time Trial

Due to my aversion to Time Trials I volunteered to take photos for the Team Cannasia-Cannondale website at this event. We had 4 teams entered and placings to defend in both the Open Mens and Mixed Duo categories.  With some pretty hot competition it was shaping up to be an interesting morning.  Credit should be given to all the riders and the effort put in by all participants was great to watch.  Cannasia-Cannondale came away with two first places and a second place, but unfortunately a flat tire robbed the Open Mens Duo of a podium place. Congratulations to Tim Clarsen (Cannasia-Cannondale) for taking out the Race Series Points Jersey.

Singapore National Individual Time Trial Championship

Waking to torrential rain in the early hours put some what of a dampener on the enthusiasm to go and shoot this event.  However Gabi was racing and so was Team Cannasia, the cycle racing team we are members of.  By the time we arrived at the venue the skies had cleared and we were looking forward to the racing.  Approximately 170 competitors of various levels turned out to race in this inaugural event.  Gabi competed in the Open Women, Joshua Png rode in the Juniors and the remainder of the team was spread out over the Open Men and Masters categories.  Variable wind conditions over the length of the course took it’s toll on the times, but I can say they gave it their all.  You can read a brief race report here.  Below is a selection of images taken of my team mates and other competitors in action out on the course.

Fast and Furious at Mountbatten

As the title of this blog suggests the Criterium held at the Mountbatten car park was an intense morning of cycle racing.  Each rider had to contend with riding in one heat race prior to reaching the final.  Due to the nature of the course, a tight bottle shape with one hair pin bend and 4 corners to negotiate, positioning, confidence, strength and speed would determine the eventual winners.  As an added extra incentive to perform the organizers introduced an elimination rule. After 5-10 neutral laps the last rider over the line was eliminated until only three riders remained. This was a great idea as it encouraged some great break aways and chases as riders tried to avoid elimination. Team Cannasia had a very successful morning taking out 1st and 2nd in the Open Men, 1st in the Open Women and 2nd and 4th in the Masters Men. You can read their race report here. Below is a small selection of photos as I was racing.  My partner in crime, Gabi, took 1 or 2 of these so I would like to credit her for her photos.

Gardens By The Bay – Off-Site Part 3

Shooting the site over August and September proved challenging due to the number of events on, in and around Singapore.  Nearly all of my locations were either severely restricted or there was no access at all.   Singapore Youth Olympics and the Formula One were the two events that created the most disruption. I did manage to get a few shots but most were limited to on site.

You can see that the gridshell on the Cool Dry is complete and is being prepared for the installation of the glazing.  Thousands of pieces of aluminum extrusion are being fitted to the gridshell to support the glazing which will enclose the conservatory. Construction of the gridshell on the Cool Moist differs from the Cool Dry and is being constructed prior to the arches being erected.  The Cool Moist also gets a red ‘crash deck’ for support purposes.
